Added sugar: why 50 grams is the limit
The difference between natural and added sugar, and where it hides.
- The WHO recommends that free sugars make up less than 10% of daily energy (about 50 g at 2,000 kcal), and ideally under 5%.
- Sugar in whole fruit comes with fiber that slows absorption — so it does not count as ‘free sugar’. Squeezed juice, however, does.
- The biggest sources: sweetened drinks, pastries, breakfast cereals and ready-made sauces.
- Gradual reduction works better than going cold turkey — start with the drinks.
